The Department of Economics at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi is one of the oldest department established by its most revered founder Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya. It grew out of nation building vision that India needed most during pre-independence era. The department of economics, along with its sister departments in Faculty of Social Sciences has produced many of the country's leading academics, educators, administrators, policy makers, corporate leaders and journalists. Some of India's leading economists like Late Prof. A.K. Dasgupta and Prof. R.N. Bhargava have taught here and its teaching program enjoys worldwide repute.

It rapidly developed into a full-fledged teaching cum research organisation. The objective of the Ph.D. programme is to produce researchers with diverse disciplinary backgrounds who can address various issues of economics. It also runs MA and BA program in Economics.

The aims and objectives of the department are to promote and conduct research on economic issues from a broad inter- disciplinary perspective. It also undertakes research projects for the furtherance of economics and social development catering to the needs of India's most backward region belt located in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Emphasis will be laid on the following areas:

2. The impact of international trading, investment and migration on countries
3. Impact of pollution on Human lives
4. Loss of Livelihood
5. Impact evaluation of various Govt. Run programs
6. Game Theory
7. Development issues
8. Energy Security
9. Public Economics
10. Education


In the past, MA students from Economics department have been placed in the corporate sector. Students from our MA program have also been admitted into prestigious PhD programs abroad and various research institutes of India.
